For the entire RTX 40-series generation, we've heard about the mythical, fully-enabled AD102 graphics card that never saw the light of day. Now, the “RTX Titan Ada” is no longer just a rumour. Renowned German overclocker Roman ‘Der8auer' Hartung has managed to acquire a prototype of this beastly GPU, giving us a glimpse at the performance king that could have been.
The first thing to note is the card's sheer size. Der8auer describes it as “the biggest GPU I've ever held in my hand”, and it's clear to see why he said that. The video shows a monstrous quad-slot cooling design that dwarfs the RTX 4090 FE. The “Titan” branding is visible on the shroud, and the I/O bracket reveals a unique design with an internally, vertically-mounted PCB.
Below that colossal cooler lies a fully enabled AD102 GPU with all 144 Streaming Multiprocessors active, totalling 18,432 CUDA cores. This is paired with an equally massive 48 GB of GDDR6X memory. Despite running on old 2023 drivers and a vBIOS limiting the power to 450W, the Titan Ada scored 15% faster than the RTX 4090 at 3DMark Time Spy. Gaming performance in Remnant 2 at 4K shows a respectable 10% lead over the 4090 as well. While it can't quite match the new RTX 5090 in most tests, the results show impressive scaling. With proper driver and vBIOS support, this GPU could have been even better.
If, like many, you're wondering why Nvidia cancelled this mammoth of a graphics card, the answer likely comes down to cost and market positioning. The number of perfect AD102 dies needed for a product like this would have been very low, making manufacturing costs extremely high. Furthermore, its performance would have been uncomfortably close to the RTX 6000 Ada workstation card in many workloads, potentially cannibalising sales of a much higher-margin product.
KitGuru says: Do you think Nvidia should have released this graphics card? If it did, would you get it during the RTX 40 series era?
