Microsoft will decide Arkane Lyon’s fate in November

Microsoft divested in a number of its studios in recent months, leading to Undead Labs, Double Fine and Compulsion Games going independent, while Ninja Theory is set to close its doors due to a lack of buyer. Now, it turns out the last remaining Arkane studio, Arkane Lyon, may face a similar fate.

Arkane Lyon was quietly amongst the list of studios Microsoft was looking to divest from earlier this summer, effectively putting the licensed Marvel's Blade game in jeopardy. According to Le Monde, months worth of consultation and negotiation discussions are now coming to an end, which means the studio's fate will finally be decided by mid November.

The unions are still hoping for the best possible outcome here, and according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, fans of Arkane shouldn't be too quick to worry about the studio's future. He says there are still “multiple paths actively being explored that would save Arkane Lyon” and that he would “be surprised” if the studio ended up shutting down, rather than joining with a new publisher, or going independent.

Part of the reason Arkane is likely to remain alive is due to the fact that there are very expensive costs involved in shutting down a game studio in France, costs that Microsoft wants to avoid.

The final date for negotiations in November 13th, so we should have a clear idea of what is happening with Arkane by this time next month.

KitGuru Says: Arkane has been hard at work on its Blade project so Microsoft would likely also face some penalties for breaking the contract with Marvel by cancelling the game. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Arkane to survive.
