Microsoft reveals plans to cut 60,000 jobs

Microsoft is in for another major round of layoffs. This time around though, the company is offering a voluntary buyout scheme, offering cash for up to 60,000 employees to leave their positions at the company.

The Voluntary Exit Offer was revealed earlier this week, targeting Microsoft employees across the US, Canada, UK and India. While this is a voluntary programme, it is in place specifically to avoid more involuntary layoffs, meaning if not enough people take the deal while available, those who remain could find themselves in the firing line anyway.

Microsoft is a massive company, employing hundreds of thousands of people around the world. If all 60K employees take the deal, then Microsoft will reduce its workforce by roughly 25%.

Those who do take the voluntary exit offer will get financial support, as well as assistance in finding employment elsewhere. It's not just Microsoft employees receiving the offer though, as Xbox employees are also included in the targeted group, despite the fact that Xbox has already shed thousands of employees over the past two years.

KitGuru Says: The last few years have been rough for employees in the tech and gaming spaces. Unfortunately, it seems that the trend will be continuing for the foreseeable future.
