Activision confirms work has begun on a new Call of Duty sub‑franchise

Activision may soon return to a three‑pillar Call of Duty strategy. For the past several years, annual releases have alternated between Modern Warfare and Black Ops, but the company has now confirmed that work has begun on an all‑new sub‑franchise intended to stand alongside those two series.

In a new interview with The Game Business, Activision’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tyler Bahl, said the team has “already laid the groundwork” for a future title that will form a new long‑term branch of the franchise rather than a one‑off experiment. Bahl added that Modern Warfare 4 will address some of the feedback the studio has received, but confirmed that a separate sub‑series is already in development.

The shift marks a notable change in Activision’s approach. Through much of the PS4 generation, Call of Duty operated on a three‑team rotation, with Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer each contributing their own sub‑franchises. That structure narrowed in recent years as the series focused almost entirely on Modern Warfare and Black Ops, so next year's game could really freshen things up.

Exactly what form the new series will take remains unclear. Activision has not hinted at a setting or theme, and there is no indication that it will revisit older concepts like Advanced Warfare. For now, the company is keeping details quiet while Modern Warfare 4 moves toward release.
