While the Switch 2 has been on the market for a decent number of months now, many studios are still struggling to get their hands on dev kits for the sequel system. According to one analyst, this may be by design, with Nintendo reportedly “discouraging Switch 2 development to some degree.”
As reported by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman, during Gamescom the analyst spoke to “plenty of developers” who claimed that “They want to ship on Switch 2. They would love to do Switch 2 versions,” but “they can't get the [dev kits].”
Furthermore, the same developers claimed that upon asking Nintendo for Switch 2 dev kits, the console maker responded by stating (in Linneman’s own words) “they should just ship it [their game] on Switch 1 and rely on backwards compatibility.”
Of course, the original Switch remains an important part of Nintendo’s catalogue, with the console maker having made it clear that they intend to continue supporting the aging hardware.
That said, as we’ve seen with other consoles, developers are willing to create two bespoke versions of a game for cross-generational purposes – and so artificially limiting the number of dev kits out there makes little sense. Hopefully this is more of a matter of genuine supply issues.
