Lexar unveils new EQ790 PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD featuring an integrated heatsink

Lexar has today announced a new variant of its EQ790 M.2 NVMe SSD, now featuring a pre-installed passive heatsink. This new model is aimed squarely at PC and PlayStation 5 gamers looking for a simple, out-of-the-box storage solution with solid performance and built-in cooling.

The new heatsink-equipped EQ790 (via TechPowerUP) will be available in 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities. All three models boast a sequential read speed of up to 7,000 MB/s. However, sequential write speeds are capacity-dependent, with the 1 TB and 2 TB variants rated for up to 5,000 MB/s, while the top-end 4 TB model gets a rated 6,000 MB/s.

The main addition here is the new red and black passive heatsink to keep temperatures low during operation. Measuring 80x24x9.7mm, the drive is fully compliant with the size requirements for the PlayStation 5's M.2 expansion slot. This makes it a convenient drop-in solution for console gamers wanting to expand their library, as no third-party heatsink is required for installation.

Lexar is rating the drives for up to 2,400 TBW and an MTBF of 1.5 million hours. Moreover, it's backing the new SSD series with a five-year limited warranty. Pricing for the 1 TB version is £69.99. The pricing for the 2 TB and 4 TB versions is still unknown, but seeing the 1 TB version is £10 more expensive than the heatsink-less model, we expect they will cost around £130 and £250, respectively.

KitGuru says: Would you pay the extra £10 for the heatsink variant, or is the additional cost not worth the lower temperatures?
