Bungie has reversed course on its plans for Destiny, announcing that Destiny 2 will continue to receive updates and that previously removed content will return to the game. The studio had declared an end to Destiny 2’s live development earlier this year, but in a new update, Bungie says Destiny remains foundational to its future and that new games are now in development.
In a new studio update, Bungie leadership confirmed that Destiny 2 will begin “unvaulting” major pieces of content removed over the past several years. This includes the original Red War campaign, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken, alongside their associated destinations and raids. The studio says this work will take time due to changes made to Destiny 2’s underlying systems since Beyond Light, but the goal is to restore key parts of the game’s history that players can no longer access today.
Bungie’s blog post acknowledges that content vaulting had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment, removing the game’s original story path and leaving new players with a confusing onboarding experience. By restoring the early campaigns, Destiny 2 will once again have a clear narrative route from the beginning, giving newcomers a straightforward way to experience the full story.
The studio also says this decision was shaped by player response. When Bungie announced Monuments of Triumph as the final Destiny 2 update, the community pushed back heavily, and the update itself saw higher engagement than the game’s last two expansions. Bungie says the passion and persistence of Destiny fans played a significant role in re‑evaluating the future of the series.
Beyond Destiny 2, Bungie confirms that new Destiny stories and new games are now in development. While the studio did not announce Destiny 3, it states clearly that the universe will continue and that Destiny remains central to Bungie’s long‑term plans. Marathon will continue as a separate project, but was never intended to replace Destiny.
