Crimson Desert launched earlier this year to strongly positive reviews from players. While the game began development as a multiplayer title, it was later reworked to be a single-player experience instead. However, with the world being so massive, there has been some demand for co-op and as a result, Pearl Abyss is currently exploring bringing multiplayer components to the game, as well as mod support.
During a recent shareholder meeting, Pearl Abyss leadership acknowledged the demand for multiplayer. CEO Heo Jin‑young said the team is “studying” both the technical feasibility and gameplay implications of adding co‑op. However, he stressed that multiplayer is not something that can simply be bolted on, calling it “a major task” that requires reviewing server architecture, balance, platform stability and ongoing operations.
While there is no confirmed plan or timeline, Pearl Abyss says it is “continuously reviewing ways to allow users to enjoy the Crimson Desert IP for longer”, and that there is “room for a multiplayer mode” as part of that process.
Mod support was also addressed, with COO Lee Dong‑won saying the studio is “reviewing it broadly”. Pearl Abyss is considering approaches such as distributing official mods directly and offering in‑game toggles so players can enable or disable them easily. CEO Heo Jin‑young added that the team has been interested in mods since before launch, viewing them as a potential foundation for long‑term growth.
Mod support doesn’t automatically create a lasting community, but it does give players the tools to keep a game alive far beyond its launch window. That’s been true for everything from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy to Skyrim, Fallout and The Witcher, and even the wave of fan‑built games that emerged from Half‑Life during the 2000s. Side note, if you ever played Earth's Special Forces back in the day, we would probably be good friends.
KitGuru Says: Crimson Desert has been my favourite new game of the year so far. I'm not as interested in multiplayer, but mod support would be an absolutely fantastic addition, especially if it allows us to make changes to our in-game camps or add new items to find throughout the world.
