LG debuts 5K Hyper Mini LED UltraGear evo GM9 gaming monitor

LG is trying to end the compromise between professional-grade resolution and eSports-grade speed with the rollout of the UltraGear evo GM9 (model 27GM950B). First teased at CES earlier this year, this 27-inch monitor is the world's first to pair a dense 5K (5,120 x 2,880) resolution with Hyper Mini LED backlighting.

By cramming roughly 14.7 million pixels into the 27-inch UltraGear evo GM9, LG has achieved a pixel density of 218 PPI. Another feature worth highlighting is the backlight, which uses LG's Hyper Mini LED architecture with 2,304 local dimming zones powered by 9,216 individual LEDs. This allows it to reach a peak of 1,250 nits and earn the DisplayHDR 1000 certification. The gap between the panel and the backlight has been minimised to almost zero, a feat of engineering that recently secured the display an anti-blooming certification from TÜV Rheinland.

Driving a 5K display at high refresh rates remains quite demanding, so LG has implemented a two-pronged solution to address this. The first is Dual Mode, which allows users to toggle between a 5K at 165 Hz and QHD (1440p) at 330 Hz. Regardless of the mode, the monitor maintains a 1 ms (GtG) response time and supports both Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. The second solution is a built-in 5K AI upscaling processor that promises to upscale content without the latency typically associated with software-based scaling. AI Scene Optimization and AI Sound further round out the package, adjusting the 99% DCI-P3 colour reproduction and audio on the fly based on the content being displayed.

For connectivity, the monitor has a DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20) for maximum bandwidth, 2x USB-A (3.2 Gen1), a USB-C port with 90W power delivery, a headphone out, and 2x HDMI ports. The LG UltraGear evo 27GM950B is available to pre-order for $1,199.99.

KitGuru says: Given that we are now seeing 5K panels with over 2,000 dimming zones, do you think the era of OLED dominance is finally being challenged, or does the “infinite contrast” of OLED still hold the crown for you?
