UK games studio, Splash Damage, is splitting off from Tencent. The company had been acquired by a Chinese company in 2016, which was then acquired by Tencent in 2020. Now, after multiple cancellations, Splash Damage has split off from the company in a move towards independence.
As reported by GI.biz, Splash Damage has split from Tencent with the backing of private investors. While the split is official, Splash Damage says it will “not be providing further comment at this time”. The studio will continue to operate under its current leadership.
Splash Damage is well known as a support studio throughout the industry, having worked on numerous AAA projects, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and several titles in the Gears of War franchise.
In recent years, Splash Damage had been working on a Transformers game, but the project had been cancelled just this year. This appears to have been the straw that broke the camel's back, as the project's sudden cancellation put a number of jobs at risk. Splash Damage also had an open world survival game in development under the codename Project Astrid, but the status of that project is currently unknown.
KitGuru Says: It would be nice if Transformers: Reactivate could get ‘uncancelled'. After all, a lot of work had been done on the game.
