Just when we thought the Zen 3 V-Cache story was over, a new and unexpected chip has surfaced. The first benchmarks for the AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D have been spotted, confirming the existence of a new budget-friendly gaming CPU for the AM4 platform.
The specifications for this CPU have been known for some time. The Ryzen 5 5500X3D is a slightly less powerful version of the MicroCenter-exclusive Ryzen 5 5600X3D. It features the same 6-core, 12-thread configuration and 96MB of L3 cache. However, there's a reduction in clock speeds for both base and boost frequencies, while keeping the same 105W TDP.
As seen in the PassMark entry spotted by X86 is dead&back, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D scored 20,498 points in the CPU Mark test and 3,005 points in the single-thread test. Note, however, that PassMark is not the best tool for gauging gaming performance. The real test, of course, will be in games, where the 3D V-Cache can truly shine.
The chip has been spotted at retailers for around the £135 mark (converted) in the LATAM market. Although there are cheaper options on the AM4 platform, this CPU offers a relatively affordable path for the existing AM4 user base in Latin America to get a significant gaming performance uplift without needing a new motherboard and RAM, especially for those running pre-Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.
