AMD is reportedly preparing a 16GB Radeon RX 9070 GRE

A new rumour suggests that AMD may be preparing to bolster its mid-range GPU lineup with a new version of the Radeon RX 9070 GRE. The report claims that a new variant of the currently China-exclusive card is in the works, this time featuring a more robust memory configuration to better position it against the competition.

According to a report from Board Channels (via VideoCardz), the new card is expected to see its VRAM capacity increased from 12GB to 16GB, bringing it in line with the rest of the RX 9070 series. This would also necessitate a wider memory bus to increase bandwidth, and the report suggests that AMD might also increase the GPU core count to further boost performance. This strategy would echo the launch of the RX 6750 GRE a few generations ago, which also came in two distinct variants with different specs.

This would make sense for AMD's current product stack. Jumping from a Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB to a Radeon RX 9070 GRE with 12GB may seem like a downgrade for some due to the reduced VRAM. With a 16GB variant of the RX 9070 GRE, that would no longer be the case.

The timing of this rumoured launch, pegged for September or October, is also interesting. It could be a strategic move from AMD to get ahead of Nvidia's own rumoured RTX 50 Super series refresh.
