The 2023 Game Awards was a big night for video game announcements. Even so, SEGA showed up in a greater way than anyone could have expected, announcing nearly half a dozen new titles all at once – including the return of many iconic franchises.
In what they have called a ‘Power Surge’ SEGA announced that many of the publisher’s most iconic retro franchises are set to make a grand return, teasing the development of a bunch of new titles, namely:
- Jet Set Radio
- Shinobi
- Golden Axe
- Streets of Rage
- Crazy Taxi
Despite the way it was presented, each of these titles will be their own unique games and based on the publisher’s wording, will be wholly new titles. While we have yet to get a proper look at the games, it is clear that SEGA is planning to take at least some of these projects in new directions, with the likes of Streets of Rage and Golden Axe adopting entirely new art styles and gameplay formulas. Fortunately, it seems as though Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi will remain much closer to their original incarnations.
Regardless, it is incredibly exciting to see all of these classic franchises returning in a new form – giving long-time fans a lot to look forward to while also reinventing the series for those who never gave them a shot previously. It will be interesting to see how long we’ll have to wait to hear more from any of these titles.
