Google Drive users report losing data

A number of Google Drive users have experienced a loss of data, it has been reported this week. Roughly 350 users have been affected so far, including some who pay for Google Drive's more premium tiers.

As reported by Bleeping Computer, complaints started racking up on the Google Support forum. In some cases, users have found that they are missing data from as far back as May of this year, which should help Google narrow down the timeline a bit for its investigation.

Google has acknowledged the issue and is currently looking into it. Support staff are encouraging users not to disconnect any accounts from Drive, or move their app data folder while it investigates the root cause.

The exact cause of the problem remains undisclosed as the investigation is ongoing. However, this incident does server as a reminder to utilise multiple backups. While cloud backup services have become a popular alternative to local storage over the last decade, relying on one source still carries risks. Local backups that you control directly are always going to be the best solution but failing that, it may be worth utilising two cloud backup services to mitigate loss of important data in the event of a disruption to one service.

We will update this story once Google has more to share.
