It would seem that Sony has actually faced a few cyberattacks this year. Sony has just confirmed a breach from back in May, during which the personal information of SIE employees was stolen.
Back in May, a hacking group exploited a vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer software, which is used on Sony systems, to break in and steal data. As reported by Bleeping Computer, Sony is sending out letters to affected employees and is also supplying them with credit monitoring and identity restoration services in an effort to minimise damage.
This is different to another recently reported cyberattack, in which a ransomware group claimed to have gained access to all of Sony's systems, stealing data along the way. That data was later put up for sale but so far, nothing further has come from it.
In a statement to IGN, a Sony spokesperson confirmed that the company is still working with agencies to identify the source of a separate breach of a Sony server in Japan, which has since been taken offline.
