The design of the PlayStation 5 and its easily removable faceplates led many to correctly assume that Sony would offer a number of hot swappable faceplate variants. Early in 2022 Sony announced their official console plates. Microsoft has now taken their own approach to such customisation, offering what they are calling ‘Xbox Console Wraps.’
Announced on the Xbox Wire Blog, Monique Chatterjee, the Senior Design Director for Xbox revealed this latest offering, saying “We know gamers want to be able to customize their consoles and show support for their favorite games, and we are delivering an option that’s more affordable and more sustainable than purchasing a special edition or limited edition console. With the launch of Series X Console Wraps, you can customize the console you already have.”
Currently, three designs have been made available: a Starfield wrap; an Arctic Camo and Mineral Camo. Despite the name, these are not simply vinyl stickers, but are instead “made with solid core panels that are layered with high-tech fabric finishes,” meaning “the wraps are folded around your console and secured with a hook and loop enclosure. The interior of the wraps are printed with silicone designs that keep the wrap in place.”
While perhaps not as elegant of a solution as Sony’s PS5 faceplates, the quality of the wraps should make for a natural looking fit when all is correctly attached and in place. The Xbox Series X console wraps will launch on the 10th of November in the UK and will retail for £39.99.
