Activision Blizzard will still release some multiplatform games

Today saw some behemoth-level news drop in the form of Microsoft announcing that it will be acquiring Activision Blizzard for a staggering amount nearing $70 Billion. Even so, it would seem the publisher’s games are too lucrative on other platforms, and so with at least some franchises, they will continue to release on multiple platforms.

CharlieIntel, a Call of Duty-focused site, reported that despite the fact that Microsoft has put down nearly $70 Billion to acquire the company, they have claimed that “Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward.”

While no specific communities were mentioned, it is somewhat safe to assume that Call of Duty will remain multiplatform. From Warzone to the franchise’s annual releases, Call of Duty simply makes too much money on PlayStation.

It is evident that in doing the maths, Microsoft has determined that advantages of making a game such as COD exclusive are outweighed by the money the franchise makes on Sony’s platform.

Aside from Call of Duty, it will be interesting to see what other IPs remain multiplatform. Diablo? Overwatch? Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater? Spyro? Crash Bandicoot? Who knows, however, with so many new IPs under their belt, Microsoft will certainly have the pick of the litter when it comes to console exclusive IPs. The next few years will be very interesting to see.
