Samsung gives sneak peek at the future of flexible OLED displays

Samsung worked on flexible display technology for many years prior to the release of devices like the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Flip. This week, the Samsung Display team teased us with a look at the next generation of flexible displays, which will enable completely new device designs.

As reported by SamMobile, last week, Samsung took part in Display Week 2021, an exhibition for the display industry. Several prototypes were shown, all featuring OLED displays with multiple fold options.

As we can see from the images, one of these prototypes is a double-folding OLED panel, which can be used like a smartphone or folded out into a thin, 7.2-inch tablet. Samsung also developed a slidable concept, where the display can be extended horizontally by pulling out the screen.

The final concept is a new display with an under-panel camera. This type of display could be used on laptops at first, hiding the standard webcam behind the display and enabling an even higher screen-to-body ratio. Eventually, this sort of tech could also be used on smartphones to enable truly bezel-less designs.

KitGuru Says: These are all prototypes for the time being, so don’t expect any of these to turn into legitimate products any time soon. With that said, this is an interesting look at the future of display technology and the new kind of designs they could enable.
